David Carson - Beautiful Mess

A few of Carson's designs while doing research.
My pick for making a poster of my own.
Instead of advertising for Pepsi, we'll be advertising for ourselves. These are some of my reference images.
Failure.
Take 2, this time with a less professional picture.
It was a really long process (3 hours?), but it was something I never tried before and it was honestly a different experience. I might make more of these...they're so addictive and fun. So many different patterns to try out...
There's a lot of space between the typeface for my hair, but that's because I have thin hair. hahaha, yeah....
My sketch.
Final. For the jumbled up words at the top left corner, it's all set up manually, through thousands of alt+arrow key and hundreds of realigning and rekerning.
Shoulders cry in anguish and pain.

Neville Brody - Empowers

By doing research on Brody's works, we will be inspired to create a name card of our own.
My pick from many of Brody's bold works.
Sadly, it's not as bold and empowering as Brody's variation. However, I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out, I enjoyed making this name card immensely!

Rodchenko: Defining Constructivism

Political advertising and education
Rodchenko and Popova both produced propaganda and educational posters. The Bolsheviks recognised the importance of boldly designed visual materials in winning support for their ideas, especially given the low levels of literacy in Tsarist Russia.

Among Rodchenko’s projects was a series of posters illustrating the history of the Bolshevik party, incorporating archival images, excerpts from newspapers and other documents. Rather than imposing an overarching narrative, Rodchenko’s design encourages viewers to immerse themselves in the historical material, sift the evidence and make their own assessment.

This section also includes slogan-posters designed by Popova as projected elements for Earth in Turmoil 1922–3, a theatrical collaboration with Meirkhol’d. The production was intended to be the visual equivalent of a propaganda poster, with a montage of political quotations, party slogans and film excerpts providing an ideological commentary on the action.

William Addison Dwiggins a.k.a. W.A.D. the Father of Graphic Design (coiner?)

It has been ~93 years since the term 'graphic design' is introduced to our community. Thanks to the great graphic designer himself - William Addison Dwiggins, the person who gave this wonderful profession a name.

Dwiggins' most widely known typefaces through the ages:
1928 Metro
1935 Electra
1938 Caledonia

His works ranged from classical traditional (Goudy & Rogers) to the new typography of Tschichold (Metro). Dwiggins was infamous for being a highly literate book designer.

For our first task, we have to design a name card inspired by one of Dwiggins' many beautiful designs.
I am especially enamoured by Dwiggins' Marionette series.
These are my sketches after researching Dwiggins' designs.
My chosen designs:
This is the one I settle for.
This is the alternate design.

A Graphic Design Company

The Nerdy Bunny Designs is a Graphic Design company. Specialises in explorative ideas and concepts, expressing ones individuality and uniqueness through cooperative collaborations to create something inspirational and functional.

The bold colour palette describes the company well --- fun, daring, and obviously the odd one out. (Or the one that is going to stand out the most). The blue and yellow are in their purest hex codes. (#0000FF and #FFFF00) The simple colouring and vector lines are there to make the logo look clean and straight to the point, and to direct the viewers eyes to its big bright blue glasses that will be the focal point of the company's logo.

Yellow is the colour of optimism and confidence. In a psychological sense, it is the colour of the mind and intellect whereas in designing it inspires original thought & inquisitiveness,

However, there is still systematical planning and process going on behind the scenes, as depicted in the company's use of clean cut straight lines to portray their sensibility and responsibility at executing their work in the most professional sense.

Nerdy Bunny Designs desire to portray a fun and exciting image to the public, all the while telling them to put their trust in them, because while designing requires creativity and explorative minds, it also demands precision and sensitivity to small things. The most holistic approach to graphic design is to know how to observe, understand, and then break all restrictions while creating something fresh and new from all those observations and revelation.

Nothing can be created without first starting, and inspirations are important. Nerdy Bunny Designs' bold blue and yellow subtly hints to this, the yellow slowly boils a passion deep inside a viewers consciousness(instead of going all out with a bold red), while the blue offers peace of mind, providing a mild soothing affect that tells the viewers it's okay to go crazy with your imagination, if you remember to do it with a sense of control and keeping your eyes on the purpose of your creation. (All of this would be in one's subconscious)

The idea first originated from the fairy tale --- Alice in Wonderland. The bunny was a crucial character to the story, and thus a bunny came to symbolise a Graphic Design company that implores fantasy and other wordly wonders in to our society. Think of the clients and the masses as Alice, just a simple and curious girl who found something unique (a talking rabbit) and wanted to know more. This leads to her finding a new and magical world, where she began to explore discovered new things she thought she could only find in books. Nerdy Bunny Designs will become that rabbit hole, bringing our new generation to a whole new world where design is out of this world, and to express their individuality through a group of like-minded partners.
The logo design was chosen among all these other sketches.

The name Nerdy was inspired by how modern society picks up a new trend in the blink of an eye. In one way, the quirky design is meant to become a quick trend around the younger generations, making it more renowned and popular. However, it is trying to prove how it is a singularity among the norm, how all the "cool kids" fit in and its not. This will be what the company is trying to say, don't try to fit in by changing who you are, your ideas, your mindset, your beliefs, your individuality. Fitting in doesn't make you stand out at all, and you should stay true to what you love, even if its nerdy bunnies with nerdy glasses.

To put it in simpler terms --- just be yourself, because whatever you had or will experience, will be special to you, and they will become unique inspirations for you that others will never ever understand. To be able to express yourself to the public and to show them your thoughts by creating something uniquely you, that is what it means to become part of the Nerdy Bunny Designs team.

Principles of Design incorporated:
-Balance
The logo is usually placed perpendicular to the corporate identity
-Contrast
The stark diffference between blue and yellow acts as a huge contrast between colours
-Emphasis
The logo is usually large enough to draw attention to it, especially its glasses
The font is Bauhaus 93, big and blocky but the curved edges make the font much more nerdy yet approachable

Elements of Design incorporated:
-Line
Lines are usually placed underneath a corporate identity to avoid a surreal floating feel to them, holding them to the ground and making them much more solid.
-Shape
The logo is in the shape of a bunny, and the glasses are considerably big to bring out the nerdy feel
-Colour
Blue and yellow, along with the reflection inside the logo's glasses
-Space
The space between the logo and the catchphrases are evenly spaced out to avoid clashing or making the whole composition unbalanced

What is a Graphic Designer???

From Wikipedia,

  1. A graphic designer is a professional within the graphic design andgraphic arts industry who assembles together images, typography, or motion graphics to create a piece of design. A graphic designer creates the graphics primarily for published, printed or electronic media, such as brochures (sometimes) and advertising.

To me,

Advertisement makes up a huge part of being a Graphic Designer. We help people sell their ideas, products, merchandises and services. In a sense, we're trying to connect the people to the various markets around them. A Graphic Designer does so in order to help the masses with their needs and wants.

A Graphic Designer combines logic and aesthetic sense to create something for the mass media, whether it's to raise awareness or just a simple advertisement. It is crucial for the designs to connect to what they are trying to convey because this helps increase the understanding of the people who come across these designs.

With so many different minds out there, every Graphic Designer is unique to their own perception of the world around us. This is the result of varying advertisement methods and awareness campaign out there that make this position interesting and effective.

Being a Graphic Designer means to connect the people to the available markets around them, by doing this, the world can be connected one step at a time.

I'd love to become a Graphic Designer that I would be proud of one day...or maybe an illustrator because it's still my first choice.
