Snow White is a princess who's been mistreated by her jealous stepmother, the Queen. After escaping from the castle she seeks refuge in a small cottage owned by seven dwarfs. Snow White tries to keep away from her stepmother for as long as possible, but she lets her guard down when an old lady approached her with the offer of true love...
Frozen is about how a princess tries her best to hide her real self because she is different from the others while another princess tries her best to get her sister to open up and to let her know how much she loves her no matter what.
What about the existing poster?
In 1937, the poster didn't use any rich colours brighten up the atmosphere, instead it's pretty old and very ancient looking. The art style is also very different from what we see today, and it differs from the actual film. The overall feel is in harmony because the focal point is precise and obvious. Most elements and characters from the movie appear on the poster, making it a little crowded. However, I think the additional forest animals made the whole thing friendly and adorable. The font chosen for the poster really shows how old the film is compared to what we see now, indicating how Disney hasn't reach its full potential.
Although the story plot deals with serious issues, the story-telling is much more lighthearted and family friendly. This poster shows exactly that, with all the major casts smiling and looking cheerful gives the impression of fun and heart warming family bonding time. The use of frozen solid ice and soft snow gives the atmosphere a chilly feel but the casts made it warm all over again. The font suits the title perfectly with its icy texture, along with its deeper blue colour which made it all the more suitable.
What treatment did I use?
Minimalism, or simplicity. Something closely inspired by designs such as these:
By limiting my colour palette, I try to make something that blends well together given how closely matched their colour choice is. The black figure stands out from the strong contrast of its background, making it the focal point of the poster. Not much of the figure is lined out in order to blend the object and background together.
For the Frozen poster, I got an additional inspiration from another poster, slightly different from how I did Snow White's. It was interesting with its colour play and how simple yet beautiful the whole poster looked. It got me trying to add the element of snow and winter into my poster. However, since I didn't include Anna, the element of warmth and spring is not included in my poster.
Why this typeface?
The font for "Snow White" was traced in AI.
For Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The "Snow White" font gave it a more traditional feel with its exaggerated curls and the fact that it looks like it's written with a quill. The rest of the font was simple (Cambria) looking as to not attract too much attention form the main focus --- Snow White.
For Frozen, I tried for an ice block feel but with more rounded edges. (Constantia) It's colour choice blends well with the background, with the white emboss separating them at the same time, showing isolation. Extra snowflake in the middle of the 'o' was to try and re-create how the original Frozen font looked.
Other possible typeface?
Maybe something that looks like it's handwritten and decorated for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Elegant and smooth making edges makes it romantic. Something edgy may also re-create the dark elements of the film.

Fonts that shows isolation and trapped emotions may work well for the tittle Frozen. Straight and linear lines make it look poised and unapproachable, like Elsa. Distorted lines show the inner struggles she faces throughout the film and the thought of everything ruined if she ever let her feelings shown.

How is it different from the existing poster?
For Snow White, the element of magic and dreams are pretty much eliminated by the choice of colours I picked. The dripping blood is in fact to enhance the role of the poisoned apple, thus giving the whole poster a darker and eerier atmosphere. Compared to the original which is much more merrier and crowded, this one is much more dark and focused, using only Snow White's bust silhouette and a photo frame as the image.
For Frozen, this looks much more serious and heavy. However, it still retains the original poster's sense of freedom with the flowing crystals acting as Elsa's silhouette. Elsa's pose is reserved and hard but this poster shows how she can be as soft as the snow once she lets it go. Little information is given about her sister Anna even though she has the most screen time, it helps focus on Elsa's side of the story and how she enjoyed being the Ice Queen.
Extra images I used in my posters:

For Elsa, I cut in Photoshop, then moved towards AI for further tracing and adding a clipping mask.
